What you need

A local video folder

pview indexes files you already have on disk. Local folders, external drives, and mounted network shares are all fine.

No account

The free version works immediately up to 200 videos. A license key unlocks unlimited indexing offline.

mpv for tiled playback

Single-video playback works without setup. Manual Tiles, Random Viewing, and Video Wall use mpv.

“Why does my computer warn me about this app?”

pview is code-signed, but a brand-new app hasn't built up reputation with Apple's Gatekeeper or Microsoft's SmartScreen yet, so you may see a caution the first time you open it. This is normal for new independent software and fades as more people install it.

  • macOS: if the app doesn't open on a double-click, right-click it and choose Open, then confirm once.
  • Windows: if SmartScreen appears, choose More info → Run anyway.

You can verify any download against the SHA-256 checksum shown above.

One quick extra: mpv

Single-video playback works out of the box. Multi-window viewing (Manual Tiles, Random Viewing, and Video Wall) uses mpv, a free open-source player. The first time you open a tiled view, pview helps you get it installed:

  • macOS: brew install mpv
  • Windows: winget install mpv

You only need this once, and only for multi-window viewing.
